Background

Buck Johnson

Coming from a long line of hunters and Redcaps, Buck is typical of the Johnson family. His fathers before him were all Redcaps and have been unassociated with the courts for a long time, although generally sitting on the Unseelie side of the fence. They have been a push for strong changeling support in Little Haven.

Even though Buck was home-schooled, he is well suited to life in Little Haven. He is one of the key organisers in the local hunting club. To some, he is one of the 'Good Ol' boys' but to others he is a bit of a thug lacking in modern social graces. He regularly takes locals and out-a-towners for hunting trips and is famous for being a savage hunter. Here he realises his Redcap nature and gleans glamour from the other hunters. The passion for the hunt and greed for the kill are what drive him.

As an aside to the hunting, he also prepares the animal skins for sale to tourists. Although he is only amateur, he also practices taxidermy to try to bring in extra cash. For hunting he uses the family collection of gunmetal (alloy of tin, copper and zinc) rifles and handguns. The collection even has a set of gunmetal hunting knives fashioned by his great grandfather which bears an ancient Redcap symbol with the text 'An tOcras Mór'.

Family and Relationships:

Buck closest living relative is his grandma who is now in a local rest home. However he does have a number of cousins across the county, some of them being Redcaps also. He does know most of them from family reunions every now and again.

When Buck was younger he has a sweetheart named Sue Harding, however in his teens Buck's father taught him the ways of hunting and being a true Redcap. The two slowly lost touch and she ended up marrying the Mayor's son when she was 23. Interestingly this marriage is not a very happy one and they have not produced any children yet.

Buck has two local Fae friends whom he met through his father.

Thomas Wahchintonka

• Thomas Wahchintonka - An elder in a local Native American reservation, he takes his tradition from his grandfather who was fae and preserves the old NA culture and its ties to the dreaming. He is well known for taking humans on a 'vision quest' thus increasing glamour. Sometimes serious about duty and honour as his grandfather was a troll, other times he embodies the frivolity of the fae and is known to drink quite heavily. Recently he has spread scandal among his clan by going out with a younger woman who is neither NA or nor very respected. He runs a casino with his brother on the reservation but gambling is not his main Satyr fix. Buck and Thomas are both members of the local hunting group for obvious reasons and Buck is welcome on the reservation by Thomas, but not so much by other Native Americans.

Beau Delaquis

• Beau Delaquis - A local Voodoo Man and Sluagh, Beau is African-american and taking his Voodoo traditions from his grandmother. He is known for driving around town in 'skeleton' make-up and makes his living reading fortunes and selling voodoo paraphenalia. He is popular with most local african-american local kids even though he scares them with his stories. He is known as an eccentric and tends to patrol the town. Although he is often in fights with drunk rednecks, he always manages to give them the slip. Beau and Buck are childhood friends and Buck always makes sure Beau is taking care of. Here is a example where Buck is 'colour blind'.

Issue:

Buck's father, Jeb, died two years ago and it was his grandmother who informed him a year ago of a Gaes that he is under. At the age of 28, he needs to find a woman to marry by the age of 30. His grandmother made sure he was raised right but has gotten feeble, both in mind and body and is no longer there to give him guidance, and with his mother having died at birth he needs to make a mark in the community soon and make the right impression on a girl. He has started on this task by cleaning up their house, knowing that soon he will have to clean up his own act.

Mannerisms:

Buck Johnson has a rough, direct way of speaking, with old fashioned mild racism and sexism thrown in for good measure. That said, his grandmother gave him a sense of chivalry and respect for others that is almost hidden.

Strength and Weaknesses:

Physically, Buck is a hunting machine and as such he is silent, quick, steady and strong. He has an athletic build, and is about 5 foot 8 inches which gives him an stockier look. In his Fae form, Buck has dark skin with a dense mesh of grey veins all over his skin. Also he has a wide sinister grin and his eyes are dark black sockets that have white pinpoint pupils at the centre. As weaknesses go, Buck is a technophobe and knows little of computers or modern gadgets. His preference is in using his wits and the outdoors, seeing technology as a source of banality due to the 'lack of passion'.
