Brief notes for 12.11.2009 episode.

4 June 1940

Wotek is having bad dreams; flashes of a hospital cell where he is being tortured or subject to experiments. However, he concludes that he is experiencing what Iliana (the little Polish girl taken from the farm) may be going though and becomes worried.

Next Hunter is leaving hospital. There is some commotion in the background but he nonchalantly steps out into the street.

Team returns from leave (Smith has been spending time with wife and child) and recuperation. They have been called to the CO's office building. Through the door Wordsworth is being dressed down by the Colonel (Colonel Harrison Smythe). Interspersed is "the Prime Minister had to order a replica drum placed at Buckland!!"

Wordsworth is dismissed to carry out a punishment detail. Dragomir is nowhere to be seen.

A briefing in Colonel's office follows verifying information from the Drake's Drum fiasco. Hunter backs up Wordsworth. Roseby seconds story and it is revealed he is a Captain in a special unit and the team is being transferred to his command.

He announces that in a few days they will visit Alistair Crowley in a Sanatorium just out of Whitby. The book found by Wotek was published by Crowley many years previously and it is their only lead for pursuing the drum and getting to the bottom of what British cult may be behind its disappearance.

In the downtime Wotek, enlisting the others, contacts Mr. Brown's residence (the foster family for Iliana) and decides to visit. They find, through the course of talking to the rude Mrs. Brown, that Iliana was suspected of having the consumption and was sent away by ambulance.

Wotek talks to the children of the house and they corroborate a story that Illiana apparently killed the family cat (it had some aspects of a ritualistic sacrifice). The youngest boy approaches Wotek alone and says that sometimes Iliana spoke in English but never made much sense.

They leave to try and find the girl at the local hospital or TB quarantine building. No luck. Smith suggests, "I think you need to ask your friend Roseby. He was the one who arranged for her to be sent away". They return to Slough (the salubrious location outside of London where they are based).

There is severe mistrust of their new Captain, Roseby. Except possibly Hunter, who has just been promoted to Corporal by Roseby.

Back on base Roseby admits he knows the girl is not in Norwich, but says she is at the same place where they will visit Crowley so Wotek will be able to see her to know everything is okay.

They travel to Whitby and immediately to the Sanatorium. There is a brief meeting with the doctor in charge, Dr. Latham Hall, who is an expert on Crowley and has been studying him for several years. Wotek asks about the girl and an orderly is assigned to take them to her. Roseby remains to talk to the doctor.

Enquiring after the girl, a nurse refuses entry but says she will bring the girl out for her constitutional later in the afternoon. Wotek leaves a stuffed rabbit as a present.

From outside in the yard Wotek catches a glimpse of the girl in her hospital bed. It is true that the nurse is dressed up with protective clothing although the two Polish soldiers agree that Iliana is unlikely to have contracted tuberculosis out in the country in Poland.

Hunter returns to the group, he had been slinking around trying to pick up information but was denied access to more secure parts of the hospital.

Eventually the nurse does bring out the girl among other children, all with shaved heads. There is a brief wave before the nurse turns her back around. Wotek is disappointed but at least knows she is alive and somewhat "well". Of course, he remains suspicious of the situation.

Roseby comes to find them, looking troubled. He has had a long visit with the doctor and with Crowley and wants to get back to London in the morning.

They are to stay in Whitby, near the Abbey ruins. Hunter and Roseby have dinner and some polite non-work related conversation. Wotek, Jachowitz and Smith say they are going into town to a traditional pub but in fact take the car with a view to breaking the girl out.

All have been having troubled dreams that are about the same general subject `- trapped in a cell being experimented on. Furthermore, Smith has a young daughter and feels compassion toward the polish girl. Wotek has an obvious bond and Jachowitz also feels attached due to the common background. None of them trust Roseby. It is not an easy decision, especially for Smith, but they decide it is the morally correct thing to do.

They spy on the hospital until well after dark, knowing the wing where the girl is being held. At one point Jachowitz notices that phone lines appear to have been cut and thinks he may have seen a figure on the roof, but all views have been through binoculars in poor light. They make their way toward the hospital.

Back at the hostel a motorbike messenger interrupts Roseby and Hunter's after dinner drinks. Hunter had been inquiring why he had been brought along; Roseby replies "for reasons such as this" and they leave on the motorbike to try and find the others. A message has been intercepted that there is German movement in the North Sea and a high likelihood that the Nazis are trying to kidnap Crowley. Failing in their search for the others, Hunter and Roseby speed toward the hospital.

Jachowitz takes up position on the roof while Wotek and Smith try and attract attention from the window next to the girl. Smith sees curtains being drawn open and decides there is no time to waste. He jumps down and Wotek breaks the glass. Peering in Wotek takes a shot at a figure in a balaclava hovering over the bed. The shot to the chest knocks him back but he regains his feet. Wotek is holding the bed as it flies away from the wall, pulling him into the room. Smith follows, rolling to narrowly miss being shot by another commando, with a child over one shoulder.

Meanwhile Hunter and Roseby have arrived on the motorcycle roaring straight up the main steps. Roseby is shouting for them to get to Crowley. They approach his cell and open the door.

Smith launches at the man above the bed but he shrugs him off. Wotek, kneeling, takes a shot and blasts the commando in the face. There is general commotion as children are screaming. The two other commandoes retreat and one pulls a gas canister out of his belt. Wotek leaps out of the window and Smith bundles the girl out after him, then turns to see children with blistering faces. "I'm going back in!" he yells and grabs several of the children, a few are instinctively making their way to the window. Smith throws each out at Wotek who does his best to catch them. Finally, the soldier slumps out of the window, his eyes puffing over and lungs burning. Wotek pulls him out completely.

Entering the cell Hunter and Roseby see a room that Hunter recognises as what Wotek had described from his dream. A small man is sitting, rocking, in the corner. It is Crowley and he is alive.

Amidst some gunfire Hunter commands hospital orderlies to drive ambulances in different directions. They load Crowley into the back of one of the vehicles. Roseby stops and thinks to go and find Doctor Hall. Hunter is left alone with Crowley. He looks at him closely and Crowley spits "Unas is in Saqqara!"

In Dr. Hall's house Roseby breaks into the study to find a decapitated body. They were protecting the wrong target!

Roseby and Hunter head for the base at Darlington. They have a chance to talk to Crowley to find out what he knows. Unfortunately the information is garbled compared to what Dr. Hall had pieced together.

Jachowitz helps Wotek, the children and a collapsed Smith, into their car, parked where they left it. Smith and the injured children are left at the hospital in Whitby. Wotek and Jachowitz drive off with the girl, effectively now on the run.
