Scythe was born and raised as a Nisibisi War Witch, brought up in the coven and taught to be a cold assassin. She was brilliant at death magic, as well as other dark forms of magic. She was a rising star when she one day fell in love with a man, somewhere. Against her better judgement, she let herself fall madly in love, and they lived a secret life in utter bliss. That is, until the head witch found out about the affair. (The head witch can be a good NPC/Nemesis.) She gathered a cackle of witches and stormed the house of the happy two. They tortured the lover for hours before they decided to kill him. Then my character calls out that she understands the error of her ways and that the lover must have hexed her somehow to make her fall in love. Scythe wants to prove that the love is gone by killing the man. And she does, and the other witches are jubilant.
Secretively, my character drew in her lover's spirit into her heart and hid it. She later ran away from the coven, and she now searches for a way to restore her lover to life, whatever it takes. She is on the run from the coven that now figures that they must have been had somehow, but they don't understand quite the whole picture.
Worse yet is that the spirit of her lover haunts her, and is set on her destruction. As a spirit, he remains in the last moment of his life, which was tortured and devastated not only by the physical torture but also of the betrayal of his lover (Scythe). He did not understand her intentions at the moment of death, and he will never understand it while he is a spirit as they don't learn. So she now struggles against her lover to try and save him, knowing the he knows no better. That doesn't make it less painful though.
The spirit mostly haunts her and slowly drives her mad, but at times, he can cause real world effects, like a poltergeist.
